Small Black Peace Basket with Hood from Rwanda

Small Black Peace Basket with Hood from Rwanda

Peace baskets are traditionally gifted by the bride to her mother-in-law with gifts during marriage and proudly displayed in homes. These baskets are used in Rwanda to store dry beans and rice. Peace baskets are made by wrapping locally available grasses over a frame of papyrus pith. The grasses are delicately woven to create a beautiful pattern. Each peace basket takes one week to complete. The pattern on this basket is called umuraza, meaning a path travelled together by friends. The path represents two friends walking and chatting through the hills of Rwanda.

This is a small black basket with hood and natural color pattern. This basket has a solid structure and a delicate look. The hood sits on top of the basket and is not a tight fitting lid. It is best suited for everyday use items like hair brushes, combs or for placing garlic in your kitchen. Basket measures 7" in height without hood, 12.5" in height with hood and 5" in width. This is a handcrafted item, so the product may vary slightly in color and craft from images.

This product is made by artisans in rural Rwanda.
