Large Hand Carved Wooden Sun Mask from Burkina Faso.
Carved wooden masks are a traditional craft carried by the Bwa community in Burkina Faso. Bwa community masks are inspired from nature and wilderness. They are part of the cultural dance ceremonies that are celebrated to purify the land and chase evil. Masks are carved from Alstonia or stool wood, a wood from a large tropical tree grown in West Africa. They are typically colored in white, black and red.
Sun masks are used by dancers to promote fertility and abundant harvest. Dancers hold the masks by the handle at the bottom during the ceremony. The circular geometric pattern on the mask depicts the radiating light of the sun. This product is a large size sun mask. Sun mask measures approx. 22" in height, 20" in width and 1" in depth. This is a handcrafted item, so product may vary slightly in color and craft from the images.
