Extra Large Colorful Lidded Storage Basket from Senegal.
Basket weaving has been practiced in Senegal for generations by Wolof community. Traditionally baskets are woven by binding cattail stalks, a thick local grass, with thin strips of palm frond. Palm fronds are difficult to work with and are rough on the hands of the weavers, so strips of plastic have replaced palm fronds to reduce discomfort during the weaving process. Plastic used for basket weaving is recycled from prayer mats.
Basket is handwoven with beige and colorful plastic ribbons. Basket measures 14" in diameter and 19" in height. This basket has cut out handles and a lid. Pattern on the basket is made by carefully choosing plastic ribbons of different colors to create a colorful pattern. This is a handcrafted item, so product may vary slightly in color and craft from the images.
This product is made by women artisans in Senegal, Africa.
